The ID/HF/UX Engineer drives Visual Design Language for BD Integrated Diagnostic Solutions (IDS), through the application of Industrial Design, Human Factors, & User Experience Design for development and deployment across new product development and product improvement projects. Define the hardware form for the lab automation and diagnostic instrument systems to provide intuitive and error free interaction to point-of-care, hospital and lab clinicians and administrators. Collaborate with Marketing and Engineering leaders to drive user-centric design strategies and practices across projects and platforms through user research and empathy for the customer.

This position is within the R&D function of BD Integrated Diagnostic Solutions business unit, headquartered in Sparks, MD and reports to the Senior Manager, User Experience Design (UXD).

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Usability champion, research-driven Innovator, classic industrial designer, brand ambassador and strategic design leader.
  • Leverage human-centered design methodologies to identify what makes a product intuitive to use. Observe and interact within a clinical environment to identify and eliminate potential use errors early in the development process. Provide insights to inspire others to think more empathically.
  • Provide creative design leadership that uncovers new product opportunities by working with the UXD team and our customers to gather, synthesize and translate user research into concepts that advance products in IDS.
  • Collaborate across BD IDS business units to build a compelling and unique brand presence in our market.
  • Translate overall business and design strategy into tactile product usability objectives and obtainable success measures for a team.
  • Optimize ID/HF/UX capability to execute great design within a complex healthcare environment. Make decisions affecting resources (people, cost, and time)
  • Apply broad project management skills to meet strategic objectives via tactical, product level detailed planning.
  • Responsible for influencing a user-centric business culture across the BD -IDS organization and guiding teams to create innovative approaches to design solutions.
  • Prepare sketches of ideas, detailed drawings, illustrations, artwork, or blueprints, using drafting instruments, paints and brushes, or computer-aided design equipment.
  • Modify and refine designs, using working models, to conform with customer specifications, production limitations, or changes in design trends.
  • Evaluate feasibility of design ideas, based on factors such as appearance, safety, function, serviceability, budget, production costs/methods, and market characteristics.
  • Confer with engineering, marketing, production, or sales departments, or with customers, to establish and evaluate design concepts for manufactured products.
  • Present designs and reports to stakeholders or design committees.
  • Collaborate with other R&D groups and Operations to develop production specifications, costs, production materials, and manufacturing methods. Provide cost estimates and itemized production requirements.
  • Direct and coordinate the fabrication of models or samples and the drafting of working drawings and specification sheets from sketches.
  • Investigate product characteristics such as the product's safety and handling qualities, its market appeal, manufacturability, and maintenance.
  • Participate in new product planning or market research, including studying the potential need for new products.
  • Read publications, attend showings, and study competing products and design styles and motifs to obtain perspective and generate design concepts.
  • Fabricate physical models to explore function and / or form concepts.
  • Develop UXD standards to improve department efficiency and uniform application of design standards.
  • Coordinate with Marketing and the VBL Steering Committee on the look and function of product lines.
  • Assist Marketing in the design of graphic material for use as ornamentation, illustration, or advertising on manufactured materials and packaging or containers.
  • Supervise assistants' work throughout the design process.
  • Advise at corporate level on issues involving corporate image projects or problems.
  • Self-directed activities focusing on the development of product line strategies, planning flexible department structures & supporting change as corporate structure evolves.

Education and Experience

  • BS/BA in Industrial Design, Human Factors, or related degree is required
  • A minimum of 5 years of relevant professional experience is required
  • Experience leading multi-disciplinary product development teams and external partners

Skills and Knowledge

  • Able to achieve a balance of daily departmental operation & individual workload.
  • Leadership experience demonstrating the ability to effectively develop, manage and coach associates to strengthen organizational capabilities around product design.
  • Additional skills and hands-on experiences that augment the design process are preferred (e. g., Human Factors Engineering, Cognitive Psychology, Graphic Design, Information Design, Interaction Design, Mechanical Engineering, Clinical Experience etc.)
