Database Administration Lead
Job Description SummaryThe Database Administration Lead is responsible for managing, coordinating, executing – by leveraging IT service providers- the delivery of services for BD’s multiple database platforms, which include but are not limited to Microsoft SQL, Oracle, Sybase, DB2, and MaxDB, Progress, Postgres, Azure SQL and MaxDB.
The delivery of these services includes planning, conceptual design, implementation, and operations of all database platforms. The scope of this position is mainly focused on non-SAP databases; however, it is expected that this position provides insights and expertise to the SAP areas as well.

The Database Administration Lead will be responsible for reinforcing and re-establishing a global Database Administration function, and oversee the creation, development, and delivery of “leading practices” around Database Administration, and managing database integrity, availability, recoverability, performance, and security. Must be a recognized expert within the discipline, who has mastered skills around database recovery, performance tuning, redundancy, and is well acquainted with the overall technology platforms and storage technologies. This position is responsible for strategic database design, systems integration, and capacity planning, and will be actively participating on demand shaping sessions as the subject matter expert on database administration. As such this position will be leading implementation projects and will have several consultants reporting directly to this role.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provide expert guidance, recommendations, and architectural best practices for the database platforms. Understand existing architecture and solution deployment. Evaluate business demands against existing and future needs and recommend best solution or alternative.
Manage the partner relationship between BD and IT service providers including but not limited to HCL, Capgemini, TCS, SAP, Oracle, Microsoft, Opentext.
Participate and coordinate validations and audit compliance requirements for all database platforms. Build and maintain database hardening standards based on industry recognized security benchmarks and internal information security standards.
Enforce a discipline focused on adhering to change control, patch management, information security standards and procedures, including a proactive and organized documentation approach to all these aspects
Participate and support the release cycle and project implementation activities throughout the year
Enforce software release management and “up-to-date” platform approach for database solutions and technologies. Provide guidance on database licenses for new installations, expansions, hardware replacements, etc. Provide recommendations for more efficient use of existing licenses via consolidations, cloud migrations, decommissions, etc.
Mentor and guide junior members in the organization
Enforce a discipline where capacity planning, monitoring, troubleshooting and problem-solving are consistently applied following ITIL and leveraging Service integration and Management SIAM practices. Maintain database Configuration Items in the Configuration Management Database and database to server and application mappings. Ensure all database CIs have a defined Support Group.
Engage and coordinate with system administration and application development teams in all implementation and support matters
15+ years of IT experience
10+ years of Oracle DBA experience
Proven track record of RDBMS administration expertise
Experience on global IT delivery practice
Strong Unix and Windows platform knowledge
Demonstrated ability to independently complete assigned tasks
Solid communication skills: both written and verbal
Available to provide off hours support as needed
Experience in systems related to the Health Care industry
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience
