Job Description Summary
BD is seeking an R&D Senior Manager to lead a team of scientists developing new point-of-care assays for human in vitro diagnostic use. Through both direct-line management and cross-team collaboration, the Senior Manager is accountable for developing new assays that employ immunoassay technologies. This individual is responsible for developing R&D project plans, aligning team activities with business objectives, maintaining a high quality of scientific work, and ensuring that the team delivers on business-critical milestones. The Manager is expected to maintain knowledge at the cutting edge of the scientific disciplines relevant to the work of the team. Duties and Responsibilities:
- Leads a team of scientists with a range of skills and years of experience.
- Responsible for a complex project that has multiple cross-functional touch points and high visibility in the organization.
- Acts as a coach and mentor to team members to meet schedules and resolve complex technical or operational issues. Works alongside team members at the bench in addition to leading their activities.
- Accountable for facilitating career and skills development for direct reports, and responsible for maintaining performance standards for the team.
- Develops and assures adherence to budgets, resources, schedules, and work plans.
- Applies expert knowledge of a broad range of techniques in biology and chemistry to execute projects. Contributes significantly to projects through original/novel/innovative input.
- Applies deep understanding of lateral flow assays and system-level thinking to include readers and controls.
- Develops policies to ensure effective achievement of scientific objectives. Implements policies when selecting methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results.
- Acts as a subject-matter expert for challenging scientific conclusions and as a stimulus for the highest caliber of scientific rigor.
- Summarizes results in written and oral reports for departmental and interdepartmental reviews and/or for external publication. Reviews project progress with senior R&D management.
- Maintains current knowledge of major technological and scientific developments in diagnostics and leverages this knowledge within responsibility areas.
- Interfaces with other departments and internal/external partners to facilitate product development.
- Publishes and/or submits patent applications in area of expertise.
Knowledge and Skills:
- Proven leader with the ability to manage and motivate R&D staff members.
- Expertise in a range of immunoassay techniques is required, including protein conjugation.
- Demonstrated ability to apply innovative approaches to product development.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Capable of balancing multiple priorities and working under deadline pressure.
- Ability to define timelines, sequences, priorities, and resources needed to meet schedule & budget
Education and Experience:
- PhD in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biology, Bio/Biomedical Engineering, or related discipline – or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Minimum of 6 years of directly relevant experience in clinical assay development or related field.
- Experience in product development, design controls and product transfer.
- Knowledge of organic chemistry, and chemical modifications of proteins.
- Experience performing colloidal gold particle or enzymatic-based immunoassays utilizing environmental or human clinical specimens is preferred.
- Experience with basic protein purification, electrophoresis and chromatographic techniques including HPLC and FPLC purification of proteins and antibodies is preferred.
