Packaging Engineer

Job Description Summary

The Engineer I supports the key business objectives of the assigned plant (Growth, Profitability, and Innovation). Through production support and assigned plant specific projects, the associate drives activities to deliver upon these objectives. Through the execution of deliverables, the Engineer I is familiar with and capable of performing in many key areas defining the duties and responsibilities of this role.

Duties and Responsibilities

The following duties and responsibilities represent the areas of work focus and related typical proficiency:

  • Troubleshooting Manufacturing Issues with packaging materials. (And Equipment, Understanding Loss of Control and how to regain it)  

  • Assists with limited products and processes implemented in the assigned product platforms and supporting plants.

  • Problem Solving, Root Cause Analysis, Diagnostics, Analytical

  • Teacher, Mentor, Leader

You can have the greatest desires for significant CI, CTW, and added capacity. If you don’t have someone that

can follow this Methodology, you will never be successful at anything else.

  • Manufacturing Fabrication Methods such  thermoforming, Lamination, Printing. Basic familiarity of some manufacturing methods and their applications. 

  • Primary, secondary, tertiary packaging components  - Familiarity with, labels & labeling systems, folding cartons, corrugated cases,  laminated rollstock and premade bags, Films, partitions, barcoding.     

  • Application of Transfer functions during troubleshooting and production support (i.e. Statistical Tolerance Analysis, Design for Six Sigma) - Familiarity with a limited set of methods used to analyze parts and subsystems.

  • Understanding of Manufacturing Statistical methods, such as process capability and Design of Experiments. Familiarity with limited statistical tools used to assist in development and troubleshooting of products and processes.

  • Project Management leadership in areas focusing on design changes, process improvements, outsourcing, material cost reduction and other plant efficiency efforts.  Familiarity with basic project requirements and schedules.

  • Back to Basics (machine control via TPM/PM processes) (Understanding on how to maintain a “Validated State”)

  • Core Team Member Representation in assigned plant - Familiarity with and can support the execution of plans with the guidance of a more senior level engineer.

  • Implementation of BD Processes, which include Validations, Deviations, Engineering Change Orders - Familiarity with basic project requirements and schedules.

  • CAPA Execution - Familiarity with the CAPA process and supports CAPA owners with the execution of specific tasks.

  • Engineering Standards - Understands and can apply some elements of various standards to engineering drawings.  Typically requires significant oversight from a more senior level engineer.

  • ISO compliance, FDA 21 CFR 820 compliance, and cGMP efforts - Some familiarity with FDA and ISO regulations and cGMP.  Requires significant oversight from SME to ensure compliance in all applicable


Minimum Qualifications


  • Candidate or incumbent must have engineering and management knowledge and skills as follows: 

  • Able to organize and prioritize assignments as a participant to assign functional teams (Recognizes resources needed, including Human, Machine, & Materials) (minimum 1 year working in a team environment).

  • Demonstrates excellent written and verbal communication skills across all levels. (capable of influencing leadership on making the right decisions supported by data)

  • Able to maintain strategic and tactical interaction with local leaders and unit level leaders.

  • Supports change management within function.

  • Familiarity with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) 21 CFR 820 and International Organization for Standardization (ISO).

Required Education and Experience:

  • Requires a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related field with less than 2 years of experience, or equivalent combination of relevant certification, education, and experience (minimum 10 years).

  • Bachelor’s Degree
