Our vision for Research and Development at BD

This is where we deliver innovation for patients, customers, shareholders and beyond across discovery, diagnostics and care provision.

About the role

BD established the SMTI (Sustainable Medical Technology Institute) in 2022. The Institute is driving sustainable innovation in three areas of environmental stewardship, furthering progress toward the company's 2030+ environmental, social and governance (ESG) commitments. The three focus areas are Materials of Concern, Sterilization, and Design for Sustainability.

This is a critical role in the SMTI, and you will drive activities focused on assessing the carbon footprint of BD products and creating insights on how to mitigate it best going forward. The long-term vision of the SMTI is to have environmental sustainability become an integral part of the product development process, and the work done will be instrumental in enabling this outcome. In addition to getting trained and becoming well-versed in Life Cycle Analysis, you will be expected to grow and become an internal expert who will advise the broader BD organization on matters related to carbon footprint assessment. Over time, this will involve developing a comprehensive understanding of the LCA (Life Cycle Analysis) methodology, practical tools, and efficient processes.

This position will be accountable for supporting high-complexity projects, products, systems, or services within BD. Regular interaction and collaboration with R&D and project team members within each Business Unit is critical for completing responsibilities. You will also work closely with the Integrated Supply Chain (ISC) team, specifically Operations, to establish a carbon footprint baseline for BD products. You are expected to be self-motivated and responsible for exercising sound judgment and applying systems thinking, problem-solving, and troubleshooting skills.

Main responsibilities will include:

  • Work as part of the broader SMTI team to assess the environmental impact of BD products.

  • Partner with various team members and collaborators across the organization to grasp the complete product lifecycle and apply it in constructing a fundamental Life Cycle Analysis for BD products.

  • Become proficient in using impact assessment tools like Life Cycle Analysis.

  • Understand how to interpret the output of Life Cycle Analysis.

  • Encourage, implement, and share established approaches across the R&D teams within all BD businesses.

  • Establish and maintain a collaborative environment to ensure flawless transfer of information across all collaborators.

  • Work closely with outside agencies and experts on BD LCAs and their verification, developing skills in project management.

About you

  • Bachelor's degree in an Environmental Science related field is required.

  • 1-3 years of experience.

  • A strong sustainability-oriented attitude is required.

  • Experience with life cycle assessment (LCA) is a plus.

  • Experience with carbon footprint assessment methodology, commonly used tools, and interpretation of results is a plus.

  • Show capability of working collaboratively on sophisticated projects with diverse disciplines.

  • Experience with sophisticated interdisciplinary systems, particularly demonstrating systems thinking, is preferred.

  • Knowledge of commonly used production systems and materials for the construction of components such as packaging materials, polymers, metals, electronic components, and batteries is a plus.
