Job Description Summary

Associate Director, Innovation R&D is responsible for using their broad technical expertise, leadership skills, and medical device development process knowledge to drive and support innovation and concept phase projects. In this role, you will work with internal and external teams to progress infusion system technology, establish intellectual property to protect infusion system technology, and establish the infusion system R&D technology roadmap based on a strong understanding of technology capability, customer desirability, and financial viability. You will pursue multiple innovation opportunities in parallel, including incremental, architectural, disruptive, and radical innovation.


You are expected to translate voice of customer and stakeholder needs into early stage concepts to test and iterate with users, identify key prioritized concept related system/product requirements, establish concept system architecture, proactively identify technical risks and mitigation pathways, develop value driven intellectual property, identify use related risks, and work with cross-functional engineers to progress the technology for medical device infusion systems (systems with mechanical parts, electronics, software, and/or algorithms). The expectation for the Associate Director, Innovation R&D is that they represent the R&D function in internal and external communication related to technology discovery, innovation, and concept development, act as a leader of technology exploration and solutions, and strive for continuous improvement within the R&D innovation and concept group. The Associate Director, Innovation R&D is expected to obtain a complete understanding of infusion user and customer needs, identify technology solutions, develop the technical system architecture for innovation concepts, develop prioritized system requirements for innovation concepts, and ensure planned innovation and concept phase project milestones are met.

What is expected of you for success in your role?

  • Demonstrate knowledge of system-level medical device technology with mechanical parts, electronics, software, and algorithms

  • Translate voice of customer and partner needs into concept storyboards, early-stage prototype concepts and system architectures, and prioritized system/product requirements.

  • Gain and demonstrate an understanding of and prioritize user needs and problems to solve to develop concepts

  • Achieve system-level early innovation and concept phase technical work, from strong understanding of customer desirability and financial viability (work include competitive advantage, concept development and prioritized features from testing with users, technology landscapes, identification of internal and external technology solutions, proof of technology feasibility, development of value driven intellectual property)

  • Complete detailed system and product-level technical feasibility and technical risks assessments

  • Complete early-stage organic and inorganic innovation roadmap development for medical devices consisting of electro-mechanical systems with software; Assess driven device features and competitive advantage

  • Develop technology landscapes

  • Complete external technology assessments and inorganic technology acquisition due diligence assessments

  • Prove concept and technology feasibility and progress concepts and/or technologies into new product development projects

  • Complete early-stage concept development and concept feature prioritization for medical devices consisting of electro-mechanical systems with software; Document prioritized concept features in written system requirements documents

  • Complete early-stage architectural decisions for medical device systems; Develop high level architectural documents for concepts to move forward into new product development

  • Develop value-based patent ideas and intellectual property

  • Serve as a key resource to examine system level technical issues and bring to resolution

  • Demonstrate knowledge of the medical device product development lifecycle and standards, clinical environments and clinical aspects of medical device usage, and informal and formal verification and validation system testing

  • Identify use related risks and associated risk control measures

  • Facilitate multi-functional team meetings to progress innovation projects and to drive concept development and proving concept technical feasibility

  • Handle external vendors and consultants, effectively communicate with internal and external teams

  • Coach and/or lead junior engineers

  • Meet planned project landmarks

  • Create clarity from multiple sources of inputs

  • See opportunities and drive continuous improvement efforts

  • Apply experience in and standard methodologies to experimental design and data analysis

  • Travel as needed, based on project and business needs, up to 25% of time

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree required with a preferred degree in Engineering (Biomedical) desired along with a post graduate degree in business, marketing, or related education or experience is desired.

  • 10 - 12 years related work experience required (or combination of work experience and advanced degrees).

  • Must have medical device industry proven experience

  • Experience early-stage prototype concepts and system architectures, and prioritized system/product requirements.

  • Experience in technical feasibility, customer desirability and financial viability of new products in medical device industry.

  • Travel Requirement: Up to 25% (Domestic and International)

Qualifications

  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a multi-functional medical device team.

  • Ability to lead multi-discipline engineering teams that may consist of mechanical engineers, electrical engineers, software engineers, biomedical engineers, and algorithm engineers to meet planned landmarks.

  • Excellent multi-functional communication skills, strong technical writing skills, attention to detail, and demonstrated ability to bring clarity to ambiguous areas to drive decisions.

  • Proven history of achievement, learning agility, and action orientation.

  • A strong technical background and experience at a medical device company including translation of user/business needs to concepts and system requirements, and system architectural development.

  • Experience with medical device company early-stage innovation, concept development, and/or new product development turning point planning and project management.

  • Experience coaching junior associates.

  • Preferred Location of Candidate: Greater San Diego, CA, Orange County, CA or L.A. County areas
