Job Description

Responsible for all legal matters in Japan, including managing relationships with external counsels in country. The role will provide advice to various business functions within the organisation on legal issues relating to its operations in Japan, such as employment law, corporate governance, commercial contracting, regulatory compliance, and litigation management. The role reports directly to the head of legal in BD Japan.

Key Responsibilities
• Provide legal advice to BD employees in Japan on various legal issues such as contract interpretation, negotiation, unfair competition, subcontracting, labor, trademark;
• Manage relationships with outside counsels in the country;
• Advise employees in Japan on the implementation of global policies and procedures, compliance with industry codes, and local law;
• Review and draft agreements and other documents used by BD in Japan;
• Work closely with other functional teams such as HR, Finance, Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) and supply chain to ensure compliance with relevant laws and regulations in Japan;
• Monitor developments in relevant areas of law affecting BD operations in Japan and provide updates and training to the organization as appropriate;
• Coordinate litigation and dispute resolution matters involving BD Japan;
• Assist the head of legal with projects or assignments as required; and
• Any other duties assigned by the head of legal in Japan.

Qualifications
• Strong knowledge of Japanese law.

• Admitted to practice law. Preferably in Japan and/or an English speaking jurisdiction;
• At least four years post-qualification experience in a similar role, preferably gained at a multinational company;
• Experience working in an international environment with multiple stakeholders, but commercial and functional;
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and tight deadlines;
• Excellent communication skills in Japanese and English;
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite applications;
• Ability to travel occasionally within Japan and sometimes internationally; and
• Ability to work independently and proactively with minimal supervision.
